Plagiarism (pronounced as /ˈpleɪdʒərɪz(ə)m/) means showing and submitting someone else’s work as your own in examinations or any other academic submission. The plagiarism policy is applied to everyone in the institution.

What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is described as submitting as one’s own work, irrespective of intent to deceive, that which derives in part or in totality from the work of others without due acknowledgement; or, in the case of self-plagiarism, unless explicitly allowed by law, submitting one’s own previously submitted work again. It is a breach of academic honesty and sincerity.

Plagiarism includes copying and presenting someone else’s language and ideas as if they are your own by:

  • Cutting, copying, and pasting from the internet or any online source, software, soft copies, or any other resource.
  • Using ideas, plans, patents, trademarks, or copyrighted information taken from someone else without reference to the originator, unless it is copyright-free and used strictly for reference purposes only.
  • Submitting someone else’s work as your own.
  • Paraphrasing pre-existing work by changing some of the words or the order of the words without proper acknowledgement.

Plagiarism can also occur in relation to the following types of material:

  • Material downloaded from websites or extracted from manuscripts or other media.
  • Published or unpublished material, including other students’ work.

What is Self-Plagiarism?

Assignments that have previously been submitted must not be provided again for formal assessment unless expressly permitted. Self-plagiarism occurs when the same portion of work, or part of it, is presented and assessed more than once.

What is a Citation?

It is compulsory to give a reference to the work used, along with the name of its author or source, wherever applicable. Proper citation helps maintain academic integrity and acknowledges the original creator of the material used.

Student Responsibility

Every student is responsible for ensuring that he or she has read, understood, and complied with the NIATM Plagiarism Policy in all work presented for assessment, examination, assignments, case studies, research papers, and any other academic submission.

In case of any query, the student should raise a support request through the official helpdesk or contact the institute through the official communication channels.

Use of Plagiarism Detection Tools

The institution uses software and programmes to identify plagiarised content in examinations, question papers, assignments, case studies, and research or academic papers.

Such software does not itself make a judgement about whether a student has committed plagiarism. It only indicates the percentage or extent of the submission that matches other sources. Final evaluation and disciplinary consideration, where required, will be carried out by the appropriate academic authority or panel of the institute.

Action in Suspected Cases

In cases where a student fails to comply with the Plagiarism Policy, or where plagiarism is suspected, the matter may be placed before the appropriate panel or authority for examination and decision. If required, disciplinary action may be initiated in accordance with institutional rules and academic procedures.

Consequences of Plagiarism

Any such unauthorised practice cannot be accepted. A student found guilty under the plagiarism policy may be required to re-appear in the examination, resubmit the work, or face other academic consequences as determined by the institute.

Disciplinary action may also be taken if any faculty member, academic guide, assessor, or other institutional representative is found favouring, enabling, or ignoring plagiarism in examinations, question paper design, programme structuring, evaluation, or any other academic assignment.
