A. Introduction
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED TECHNICAL & MANAGEMENT STUDIES (NIATM) is fully committed to providing, so far as is reasonably practicable, a quality working environment that poses no risk to the health and safety of our employees, contractors, students, visitors, community, and stakeholders.
The health and safety of employees, the public, and the protection of the environment are core institutional objectives for NIATM, ranking equally with the institute’s other academic, administrative, and operational objectives.
Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) risks associated with the activities and practices of NIATM are to be identified, assessed, and mitigated through the effective implementation of this Health Safety & Environment Policy.
B. Key Objectives
- To promote a positive HSE culture through visible commitment and effective communication.
- To comply with all applicable local and national regulatory requirements at our offices and operational locations, following whichever requirement is more stringent where applicable.
- To reduce the impact of the institute’s activities on the environment in order to prevent or minimize damage, discharge, excessive waste, and harmful emissions.
- To install and operate properly designed and maintained facilities, plant, systems, and equipment and keep them in a safe condition.
- To get it right the first time, every time, with no accidents, no harm to people, and no harm to the environment.
- To ensure that the necessary resources are made available for a safe, healthy, and environmentally friendly workplace and surroundings.
- To confirm that NIATM meets its objectives by reviewing, reporting, improving performance, and auditing the implementation and operation of its HSE management practices.
- To maintain effective contingency plans adequate to meet all identified emergency scenarios.
- To apply risk management processes ensuring that any work undertaken does not involve unacceptable or uncontrolled risk to personnel or to the environment.
- To ensure that safe working conditions are provided and safe procedures are followed at all locations in order to protect employees, contractors, students, visitors, and the public.
C. HSE Framework & Mechanism
Accidents can be prevented, and the ultimate goal of NIATM is to have zero accidents and a safe work environment. The institute will strive to meet this target by ensuring, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health, welfare, safety, and security of employees, contractors, students who visit the premises periodically, and any people likely to be affected by the institute’s activities, while also protecting the environment.
To ensure this, NIATM will continue to:
-
Endeavour to continually improve HSE performance through a systematic and proactive approach, including setting objectives and targets, performing regular audits and reviews, and actively seeking stakeholder feedback.
-
Empower all personnel to stop work if they believe that they or anyone else are at risk while carrying out their tasks.
-
Involve the workforce through effective training, participation, and consultation, and by providing an effective system of communication throughout the institute.
-
Report and investigate accidents and incidents, including those with the potential to result in injury to employees, harm to the environment, or damage to the institute’s property. Effective systems for monitoring performance, auditing, and review in relation to health, safety, environment, and quality shall be maintained.
-
Ensure that it is the responsibility of all directors, managers, staff members, consultants, and associated personnel of NIATM to comply with this policy.
-
Recognize that the Chairman and senior leadership of the institute have ultimate responsibility for health and safety at the workplace and take this responsibility seriously.
The health and safety of the institute’s staff, students, and visitors is of paramount importance, and the leadership of the institute embraces its health and safety responsibilities. The institute shall provide leadership in the development of health and safety strategy and shall make every effort to meet its legal and institutional duties for the health and safety of employees and others affected by NIATM’s activities.
